- Episode Description
- Black Americans have the greatest disparities in health of any population in the United States, except for maybe Native Americans, says Dr. JudyAnn Bigby, secretary of the Executive Office of Health & Human Services in Massachusetts. In order to get a closer look at what the disparities were for African Americans and other communities of color in Massachusetts, Bigby's office, under Governor Deval Patrick's administration, and the Department of Health examined the trends and released the first detailed report showing the differences in health status among racial and ethnic groups across the state in November 2007. "They're dying from things that are preventable," says Bigby, citing heart disease, HIV/AIDS, and homicide. In this episode of Basic Black, Bibgy talks with host Kim McLarin about some of the factors that may be contributing to health disparities and why she thinks the report can serve as a tool for empowering communities of color with the information they need to combat health problems. "There's a lot that we need to do," Bigby says.
